Heya there, big admirer of the absurd amount of work you do here. Now, back onto the topic, have you ever seen the word Polemarkos used in the books? I want to know if it is mentioned anywhere in the saga and if possible, the description or the context it is in. Thank you very much!

Answer
The title of Polemarkos is used, by my reckoning, 77 times throughout the series. All but two of these times it is in reference to Myron, he of Temos, cousin to Lurius of Jad, Ubar of Cos.

Myron was in command of the Cosian forces on the continent during the occupation of Ar by Cos.

Unfortunately, no direct synonym is used to better define this role. However, in context, one might conclude it refers to a commander or general.

In one case, reference is made to "your Polemarkos, Myron" and "Myron, my Polemarkos".

The two times I mentioned where Polemarkos is not used in reference to Myron, the word describes a decision maker similar to a praetor or stratigos.

I wish you well,
Fogaban

Myron is a fine Polemarkos," said a man.
"Yes," said another.
I agreed with these estimates. Myron had weaknesses as an officer, and as a man, but he was, in my opinion, an excellent commander.

"'If Ar desires peace, and would survive, if she desires peace, and would be freed of the onerous yoke of a tyrant, let her deliver to my plenipotentiary, Myron, Polemarkos of the continental forces of the Cosian ubarate, some sign of her desire for peace, some evidence of her hope for reconciliation, some token of her good will.'"

"Ar will do her best, I am sure, to officially welcome, and express her gratitude to, her liberator, the great Lurius of Jad," I said.
"Represented by his captain, and cousin, Myron, Polemarkos of Temos," he said. This was Myron's exact title, incidentally. Temos is one of the major cities on the island of Cos. The crowd, of course, or many in it, regarded him simply as the Polemarkos, or, say, understandably enough, and, I suppose, correctly enough, as the Polemarkos of Cos.

"When you return to your headquarters," she said, "please request your Polemarkos, Myron, to also honor us with his presence."
. . .
"I shall come early," he promised, "and I do not doubt but what I shall be accompanied by Myron, my Polemarkos."

The name of this city, if I have not mentioned it before, is Ar. It is nominally governed, as I understand it, by a ubara, whose name is Talena. The actual governance is presumably in the hands of a military governor, one named Myron, who bears the title of Polemarkos of Cos, or, more strictly, Polemarkos of Temos, which is the third largest city on the island of Cos. He is said to be the cousin to Lurius of Jad, the Ubar of Cos.

The auctioneer's assistant then raised his hand, and called out, "Four!"
"Four, from my colleague!" called the auctioneer.
"He is not permitted to bid!" cried a man.
"Five," came from the crowd, somewhere.
"I rule my colleague may bid, subject to review by the camp polemarkos," said the auctioneer. "But the point is moot, as we have a bid of five."
