Got a debate going about slaves and coins. Some say they never got to touch them. Others say they could handle them with permission of their owner?

Answer

It's both yes and no, depending on the city, the owner and the circumstances.
A slave girl, you see, is generally forbidden to so much as touch a coin without permission. This does not mean, of course, that they may not be sent to the market, and given coins for errands, and such.

Slaves are seldom allowed to touch money, save under particular conditions, as in shopping. Even the money cast to the feet of a dancer is commonly retrieved by a taverner's man.
