 Q #  Question
34
"I am looking for reference as to slaves not being allowed to say "Tal" to Free or slaves in greeting, and the same for the phrase "Be well" or "I wish you well" Thanks awfully..."

Answer
Hello,

Actually, slaves are shown to utter the words "Tal, Master". Though only in one book, it is shown to have happened twice. The instances are listed first.

On to the words "Be well". As surprising as it may seem, nowhere in the series do these two words appear in this order.

Finally the phrase "I wish you well" is shown to be a common Gorean farewell. I did not show all of the times when these words were spoken by a free person to a free person. However, after the 'Tal, Master' quotes is every instance where a slave speaks these words, both to a free person and to another slave.

I wish you well,
Fogaban

The girls stood straight, proud under the gaze of a warrior.
"Tal, Master," said many of them, as I rode slowly by. "Buy me in Tor, Master," called another.
. . .
"Tal, Master," they said to me. "Tal, Slave Girls," I said to them.

"Will you not say farewell to your sister slave?" I asked.
She came to my side, and knelt down beside me. "Yes," she said, tears in her eyes. "We are all slaves," she said. She took me in her arms and kissed me. Slave Beads was no longer the Lady Sabina. She, too, now, was only a slave. "I wish you well, Slave," she said.
"I wish you well, Slave," I said to her.

My arms were instantly pinioned to my sides. I heard a woman's laugh behind me.
"Light the torches," said another woman's voice. I recognized it as that of my Mistress, the Lady Tima.
