I believed it to be an online-ism, but wanted confirmation. I dont necessarily need a quote, but if it is in fact true, I thank you for the knowledge.

No, I know of no instance where a woman is "claimed" as a Free Companion. Even in Torvaldsland, the only Free Companion I remember was Bera, companion of Svein Blue Tooth.
