| 437 | Tal, Master. As most do, I have always pronounced Ubar as OOO-Bar. It came to my attention recently it may actually be pronounced YOU-Bar. In the novels it is written "A Ubar" Grammar wise, if it is OOO-Bar wouldn't be "An Ubar?" The audio books say OOO-bar. I am not even sure if anyone but Norman would know the answer to this. He has not returned my calls...grins. Thank you!

I too have always pronounced Ubar as OOO-bar. And yes, I have also heard others pronounce it as YOU-Bar.
Aside from hearing John Norman pronounce it, we will never know what pronunciation he has in mind.
The problem goes oh so deeper though.
In Second Life, I have been involved with discussions, classes and book readings broadcast over the air for many years. And I have listened to many, many people speak on Gorean topics.
To begin with, we have the word Gorean itself. I have heard it pronounced, (as I do) GOR-e-an. And much more often I have heard it pronounced gor-E-an.
I have heard Ko-ro-ba pronounced (as I do) KO-ro-ba. But also as ko-RO-ba.
Marlenus, the Ubar of Ubars, pronounced (as I do) Mar-LEN-us. But also as MAR-lenus.
And Talena, Tarl’s first love, pronounced (as I do) ta-LE-na. But also as TAL-en-a.
As you mention, we have audio books. And one could take them as the authority. But I’m afraid you will always have those who will argue a different way.
The bottom line is that, however you pronounce these words is correct and everyone who pronounces them differently is just . . . wrong. *winks*
